Oscillatorproducten worden gebruikt als referentiebronnen voor frequentie/tijd, onderscheiden van kristalproducten die vaak voor vergelijkbare doeleinden worden gebruikt door hun integratie van extra functies voor onderhoud en stabilisatie van de resulterende output. In minimale vorm bestaan ze uit een kristal of ander resonerend element plus functies die nodig zijn om een gebruiker in staat te stellen een frequentiereferentie te verkrijgen zonder uitgebreide aandacht voor de werking van het resonerende element. Meer geavanceerde apparaten integreren temperatuurcompensatie of besturingsfuncties om een stabielere referentie te verkrijgen of een referentie die selectief kan worden aangepast.
