When selecting a replacement capacitor, matching key specifications is critical. Start with capacitance (µF or MFD), which must fall within the tolerance range of the original component, typically ±5% to ±10% for run capacitors and wider for start capacitors. Next, match or exceed the voltage rating (VAC); never use a lower-rated capacitor, especially in high-voltage systems. Confirm the capacitor type, as start and run capacitors are not interchangeable, run capacitors are designed for continuous duty, while start capacitors are built for short-duration use. It’s also important to verify frequency (usually 50/60 Hz compatibility), along with physical characteristics such as can shape, mounting style, and terminal configuration to ensure proper fit and installation. Troubleshooting capacitor issues is often straightforward and can prevent unnecessary motor replacement. Testing can be done with a multimeter that measures capacitance (after safely discharging the capacitor), comparing the reading to the labeled value, significant deviation indicates failure. Visual indicators such as bulging, leakage, or burned terminals also signal replacement. Because heat, electrical stress, and duty cycle affect lifespan, capacitors are common wear items. Checking them during routine maintenance or system tune-ups is a simple, cost-effective way to maintain reliable motor and HVAC operation.
