Een gasontladingsbuis of GDT, is een verzegeld, met glas afgesloten apparaat dat een inert gasmengsel bevat dat gevangen zit tussen twee electodes. Wanneer een spanning groter dan de GDT wordt overschreden, ioniseert de verhoogde spanning het gas waardoor het elektriciteit kan geleiden en de overtollige spanning naar de aarde kan worden omgeleid.
