UART's (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) interfaces zijn fysieke circuits die parallelle bits van een microcontroller of CPU omzetten in seriële bits voor transmissie, of ontvangen seriële bits omzetten in parallelle bits voor gebruik door een andere microcontroller of CPU. UART's kunnen RS232-, RS422- of RS485-protocollen gebruiken voor gegevensoverdracht en worden geselecteerd op basis van aantal kanalen, gegevenssnelheid en extra functies zoals interne oscillatoren, timer, teller, GPIO en printerpoorten.
