Apparaten uit de PMIC-familie (Power Management Integrated Circuit) van de LED-driver worden gebruikt om een gestuurde waardestroom te leveren aan een belasting, meestal een Light Emitting Diode, van een voedingsbron met een nominaal vaste spanning. Belangrijke onderscheidingen ten opzichte van de zeer gelijkaardige producten die ontworpen zijn voor de spanningsregeling zijn onder andere een typisch lagere terugkoppelingsspanning (om de efficiëntie van het systeem te verbeteren) en een hoge prevalentie van voorzieningen voor externe controle van het werkingspunt van het apparaat, die gebruikt worden om dimfuncties in verlichtingstoepassingen uit te voeren.
