Een TVS-diode (transient voltage suppressor) is een halfgeleider-beschermingsdiode die ontworpen is om schadelijke spanningspieken af te klemmen voordat ze gevoelige elektronica bereiken. Onder normale omstandigheden blijft het apparaat in een niet-geleidende toestand tot aan zijn omgekeerde standoff-spanning (VRWM). Wanneer een voorbijgaande gebeurtenis zoals een ESD-gebeurtenis, inductieve belastingsschakelpiek of bliksemgeïnduceerde overspanning de doorslagspanning (VBR) overschrijdt, treedt de TVS-diode snel in geleiding en beperkt de spanning tot een gedefinieerde klemspanning. Deze extreem snelle respons, meestal sneller dan traditionele Zener-diodes, varistors of thyristors, maakt TVS-apparaten ideaal voor het beschermen van MOSFET's, IC's, gelijkrichters en signaallijnen tegen elektrostatische ontlading en piekstroomgebeurtenissen. TVS-diodes zijn verkrijgbaar in unidirectionele en bidirectionele versies en worden vaak gebruikt over voedingssporen, parallel aan signaallijnen of op circuitinterfaces die blootstaan aan externe verbindingen.
