The 8863 features a very robust design with an HBM ESD rating of 6kV. The 8863 is also very power efficient with a total power consumption of 250mW @ 2.5V supply voltage. At 3.3V, it is around 400mW. The port 1 and 2 bypass modes enable Ethernet packet flow between ports 1 and 2, while the CPU at port 3 goes into a low power saving mode. This is very useful for an IP-STB application. In addition to the power efficiency features, the 8863 provides flexible interface support with 3 configurations: support for two copper ports and one MII interface (MLL version), two copper ports and one RMII interface (RLL version), or one fiber port and one copper port (FLL version), which is very useful in a media converter application. The series provides an internal 50MHz clock for RMII, so that the designer will not need to use an external 50MHz oscillator in their design. The 48 pin package that the 8863 offers is only 7mm x 7mm, versus the previous 14mm x 20mm.
