Stappenmotoren zijn DC-spanningsbewegingsactoren die in afzonderlijke stappen bewegen. Meerdere sets spoelen georganiseerd in groepen genaamd "fasen" bepalen de positie van het motoranker. Door elke fase in volgorde te bekrachtigen, wordt de armatuurrotatie stap voor stap veroorzaakt. Met computer of microcontroller beheerd stappen wordt nauwkeurige positionering en/of snelheidsregeling bereikt. Stappenmotoren worden geselecteerd op basis van koppel, stappen per omwenteling, staphoek, NEMA-framemaat, spoelweerstand, polariteit en askenmerken.
